Change In Congress May Not Be Enough For Online Casinos

Even though most of the online gambling industry is very satisfied with the new online-casino-friendly Democrat government, it may be a bit too early to celebrate. Many experts in the industry have already warned the companies that it may take the Congress quite some time until they even start considering regulating online casinos. “They’ll just say that they have already dealt with this issue if the subject of regulating online casinos comes up again” says David Stewart, a Washington attorney who advises the American Gaming Association.
Although the two biggest members of the association – Harrah’s Entertainment and MGM Mirage – want to legalize Internet gambling in the US, not all the members agree. A meeting scheduled for next month will end up deciding if the American Gaming Association will push for a legislation that would legalize online casinos, or not. No matter what will they eventually decide, according to Stewart it may take the Congress more than a decade to legalize online casinos, which could lead to the annihilation of a 12 billion dollar industry. It appears that although online gamblers are growing in number, they still don’t have the political power that could really lead to a new legislation
Nelson Rose, a professor at Whittier Law School in California and an Internet gambling expert, believes that rather than legalizing online casinos nationwide, the Congress may eventually decide to opt for a regulatory system that will enable Internet betting for in-state residents. Either way or another, the next months will surely decide the future of the online casinos and the whole online gambling industry. |
