Smarty Jones will be the betting mans favorite heading into the 2004 Belmont Stakes.
Horse betters took home $.70 on the dollar following Smarty Jones victory at Saturdays Preakness, the second leg of the Triple Crown, and the odds look to be even closer for next Saturdays Belmont Stakes.
After winning the second leg of the Triple Crown, The Preakness, by a record 11.5 lengths on Saturday, May 15, Smarty Jones will attempt to become the first Triple Crown winner in 26 years.
Smarty Jones could also become the winningest horse in racing history. Pending he completes the Triple Crown, Smarty Jones will win the Visa Triple Crown purse, a hefty $5 million prize.
There is a lot riding on Smarty Jones, aside from his jockey.
Bred just outside Philadelphia - a city notorious for getting close to championships, but not winning Smarty Jones is trying to break the recent trend of could have, should have for athletics in that area.
The Belmont Stakes has also been coined the Test of a Champion, and its 1.5 mile track will be the longest Smarty Jones has ever had to run.
The nation, it seems, will be rooting for Smarty Jones.
History, however, will not be on his side.

The previous five bettors favorites have all been defeated, including last years favorite, Funny Cide, also according to the Stakes.
9 horses have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown, The Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, since Affirmed completed the Trifecta in 1978. None of those 9 have gone on to win the Belmont Stakes.
