Greeks Expand Fun at Online Casinos, Despite Ban

Nobody can accuse the Greeks of not knowing to have a good time and when it comes to online casinos, not even the law seems to be able to stop that penchant for entertainment. Statistics show that gambling in Greece is on the rise and that includes online casinos as well – despite the fact that the Greek government is yet to pass a bill that legalizes online casinos and electronic gambling in general.
Kathimerini, the Greek news agency, recently noted that Greeks spent over 8.5 billion Euro a year on their gambling fun. This amount also included money spent at online casinos, lotteries, sportsbetting sites and other forms of internet gambling. Gamblers spent 1.5 billion Euro a year enjoying the fun at online casinos, even though Greek law specifically states that electronic games are not legal within the country’s borders. What draws punters to online casinos, in particular, is the fact that they stand a better chance of winning on the internet than at one of the country’s legal off-line casinos, such as the publicly listed OPAP.
Police sources say that although the actual number of people who gamble at online casinos is decidedly less than those who gamble legally, the amount of money spent at online casinos is considerably higher. It is thought that one in 10 legal land-based casinos help their regular customers make bets online by processing the bets themselves and then taking a certain commission.
