SkyWaves Research Report Releases New Satellite Radio

28 Sep 2004

SkyWaves Research Report, an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based research publication covering the satellite radio industry, reported Monday that satellite radio subscriptions are poised for spectacular growth as the holiday selling season approaches. In its fall edition, SkyWaves Research released findings of its quarterly channel checks and sales estimates, and it published its annual analysis of current and future relationships between satellite radio broadcasters and automobile manufacturers. Taken together, these studies portray an industry that will report vigorous growth in quarterly and year-end subscribers -- and is likely to enjoy long-term growth that is still underestimated by many observers. "Our studies illustrate the enormous potential for accelerating subscriber gains," said Steve Black, a SkyWaves Research writer. "Among other things, we see three to four million new vehicles equipped with satellite radios annually and continually, beginning in the 2006 model year." Based on its extensive channel checks and additional analysis, SkyWaves Research estimated that XM Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: XMSR) would reach a year-end total of 3.32 million to 3.37 million subscribers, substantially above the company's conservative guidance. SkyWaves Research also estimated that Sirius Satellite Radio would reach a year-end total of 955,000 to 980,000 subscribers, and that it could reach its year-end goal of 1 million subscribers. The conclusions, plus third-quarter subscriber trends and forecasts, were included in the latest, 52-page edition of SkyWaves Research, which brings its readers important information, in-depth analysis and interviews that are not available elsewhere. This edition also features a breakthrough report and analysis of the data-delivery capabilities of satellite radio broadcasters, which represent an underappreciated additional source of revenue. "It is time to stop thinking about satellite radio as a music delivery service," Black said. "It is time to start thinking about it as a service that delivers data in the form of ones and zeros, some of which happen to produce music." At the same time, SkyWaves Research is proud to announce an expanded lineup of services to its subscribers. This includes the recent introduction of the SkyWaves Research Weekly News Summary (a weekly roundup of satellite radio developments and commentary, emailed to subscribers each Friday evening) and an ambitious program of Flash Emails that feature instant updates and breaking news.
