Was the Online Casino Banning a Smart Political Move?

Two months ago a group of Republican congress men managed to pass through congress a bill banning online casino use by American residents. The bill had a difficult struggle passing through the senate. At first, the online casino ban was attached by Senate majority leader Senator Bill Frist to a bill reauthorizing funding for US troops in Iraq that didn't work so he attached it to the rushed port security bill. President George W. Bush signed the online casino banning bill into law.
The Republicans pushing law through Congress and Senate used rhetoric of child protection and moral decay. Although no study was made of the impact the online casino has on society. Family values may be a large portion of the motivation for legislating the online casino ban yet many people who disagree with the law believe that the law's real motivations were commercial and that online casino related problems could be dealt with through regulation as apposed to prohibition. The online casino industry has already spawned several non government regulatory institutions.
Although the online casino ban is in effect polls show that a great majority of Americans appose the law and with elections at their doorsteps this might have an effect. Estimates show that between fifteen to twenty million Americans gamble at an online casino at least once annually. If only a fraction of these players log on to an online casino and is not admitted because of the law and only a fraction of these changes their vote this could drastically effect the outcome of the elections. |
